Tell the Southampton Town Board to Pass the Nonconforming Mine Amortization Law 2/25 Tell the Southampton Town Board to Pass the Nonconforming Mine Amortization Law 2/25Read or Edit the Petition Dear Supervisor Moore and Southampton Town Board Members, As I am deeply concerned about protecting our groundwater and community character, now and in the future, I am writing to urge the Southampton Town Board to fully support the newly proposed local law regarding the amortization of nonconforming sand mines (Article XXXII). After decades of sand mines being allowed to operate in residentially-zoned areas, despite having been deemed as nonconforming 50 years ago, I believe that the proposed amortization of these mines is a reasonable approach to ultimately remove these industrial operations, better protect our drinking water reserves, preserve community character, and restore our natural resources in the broadest interest of the public. Once closed, these mines can begin their required site reclamation and establish land-use rights under the current zoning and land-use requirements. Few natural resources are as vital to the future of Southampton as our drinking water reserves. The continued operation of intensive industrial uses is contrary to decades of town planning, zoning, land use, and public investment decisions. Please move forward with this initiative and do your part to protect our precious water supply while supporting the goals of your comprehensive plan.
